The Economist Story
The Economist, originally known as the London Financial Guide, debuted on January 10, 1888, before rebranding as The Economist on February 13 of the same year. Its mission was to support “The Sincere Financier, the Genuine Investor, the Reputable Broker, the Authentic director, and the Lawful Speculator.” Initially, it was a concise four-page publication catering primarily to London’s financial community, competing with the older Financial News, founded in 1884.
On January 2, 1893, The Economist adopted its distinctive light pink paper, setting it apart. However, this choice led to higher costs due to special dyeing requirements.
In 1945, Brendan Bracken merged The Economist and Financial News, ending their 57-year rivalry. The merger broadened readership and introduced the Lex column, enriching the publication.
